Avoid Public Wi-Fi

Cyber Security Tip

WI-FI is fabulously convenient and increasingly available when you are out and about.

However, WI-FI is a honeypot for crooks to trick you into attaching to 'safe sounding' sites like 'Starbucks-Free WI-FI'

Once you attach to these WI-FI bait sites , you are a sitting duck for these crooks. They can break into your computer, steal data, and cause other havoc.

You can reduce your exposure somewhat by using VPN software (explanation below).  But you are still very much exposed.

If you think that this warning against using public WI-FI is a bit extreme, attend one the hacking demonstrations that we (and others) use to educate professionals like you.  When  see how easy it is for crooks to compromise your devices, your habits are likely to change.

This is not just a problem for your IT department. You/yourself are on the front line of safe practices.

Public Wi-Fi makes you a sitting duck for criminals and others who can infect your computer

Security Tip: Use Password Software to Manage your Login Credentials.

Sure, the purists advise us to haveseparatepasswords for each site we visit, and never re-use passwords. Great advice, but in the real world not always practical.

Therefore, many of us revert to less secure practices, such as a small group of passwords that we rotate based on low vs. high security web sites like bank accounts.

With different password rules on different websites, many of us reach the point where we need to 'write down' somewhere, login names and passwords.

Rather than a hand-written list (or an Excel file),  we recommend that you use password software such as Roboform (www.roboform.com) or LastPass (https://lastpass.com).

Security Tip: Encrypt Your Portable Devices

Although security purists would advise you to never carry around devices with sensitive data, this is often impractical.

We need our address book, our calendar, and sometimes login names, passwords, and other sensitive data.

Sure, we would hate to have someone steal our device. Yet theft of the device is trivial compared to the time and aggravation it will take to deal with data theft or identity theft. Imagine if everyone in your contact list received an email from YOUR Email address  with solicitation for adult materials. Not good.

One easy and effective level of protection is to encrypt your portable devices.  Although this sounds scary or hard, it is not.
